CHILDREN'S FANCY DRESS BALL.

The chrildren's fancy dress ball arranged by the committee of the First Hutt Troop Boy Scouts held last Thursday evening was the most successful effort of its kind ever held in the Scout Hall. The Hall was gaily decorated for the occasion and was filled to overflowing with gay and chattering children and their parents. There were about 200 children present, representing almost every conceivable costume usually seen on such occasions. It might well be expected that there would be some difficulty in controlling such numbers of excited youngsters, but Mesdames Cavaye and Westbury mingling freely with the children, directed their actions and dances. A note, sounded on a whistle, carried by these ladies, brought instant silence and one could not help thinking that if all the children were as well disciplined in their homes, then, truly, there must be many model homes in the Hutt. It was also pleasing to note how the infants were cared for .by their elder play-fellows.

The judges —Mesdames Hoggard. Murray and Mr. Meredith —had great difficulty in allotting the prizes. Speaking on behalf of the judges, Mr. Meredith said they had judged at many similar functions but never had they found the standard so high. The costumes were inexpensive and great attention had been paid to detail. It frequently happens, said Mr Meredith, that the characters am Bpoiled by exaggeration and he was particularly pleased to see an absence of this fault. He congratulated those mothers who had taken so much interest and trouble in dressing their children and hoped it showed their interest in the Scout Movement. Whilst it was difficult to make a decision to meet the approval of all, they had done their best and hoped no heart burning "would be felt. MiMeredith also took the opportunity of thanking those who had assisted to make the evening a financial success by their presence.
