THE KING AT WAR

AUSTRALIAN RESPONSE SYDNEY, Oct. 7. An interesting explanation of why Canada formally declared war on Germany and Australia merely announced that she was at war because Britain was, was given by the Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies.

It was due, he said, to a difference of opinion on the meaning of the kingship. Canada believed that the kingship was divisible, whereas, the view in Australia was that if the King was at war all Empire countries were at war. All this, however, was merely theoretical. The fact was that there was complete unanimity between all members of the British Empire.

“In Canada and South Africa there has been a well-developed view that the kingship is, so to speak, divided, the King presiding over each separate Dominion,” said Mr. Menzies, “but, personally, I have never accepted this view. The ratification or otherwise of the Statute of Westminster has no bearing on the matter.”
