HEAVY FINES FOR BOOKMAKING
COUNSEL’S UNUSUAL PLEA IGNORED
By Telegraph—Press Association HAWERA, Last Night. Declining to listen to one counsel’s submission that a law which did not have the support of public opinion would never be obeyed, Mr. A. Coleman, S.M., in the Hawera Court imposed fines totalling £273 on seven who pleaded guilty to charges of bookmaking, keeping common gaming houses, assisting in keeping such premises and being found thereon. The defendants were William Elder, who was convicted and fined £125 for bookmaking in Hawera on June 3 and £25 for keeping a common gaming house; lan Joseph Crawford, convicted and fined £25 on a charge of bookmaking and £lO for assisting in a gaming house; Hugh Henry Lavery, convicted
and fined £3O and £lO on the same charges against Elder; Alexander Creighton Lobban, convicted and fined £2O and £lO on the same charges against Crawford; Albert Holt, convicted and fined £ls on a charge of bookmaking; Re veil Amnion, Charles Henry and Norman Shirley, convicted and fined £1 10s each on charges of being found on gaming house premises.
