AGED MAORI'S DEATH.
FOLLOWER OF TE KOOTI (Hy Telegraph—Press Association. GISBORNE, July 10. The death has occurred at Te Karaka of a well-known Maori, Pcneha Tamaihoia, who was reputed to be .102 years of age. With the exception of failing eyesight, Penoha retained his faculties to his death, and could give an interesting account of life in Poverty Bay during the Maori Wars. Peneha had an adventurous career. In his younger days lie was allied with To Tvnoti’s forces, and he was one'of the Maoris deported from Gisborne to the Chatham Islands in 18(15. During the three years he was there lie worked as a shepherd, lie rettirned to Poverty Bay in 1808, and took part in many skirmishes until Te Kooti’s forces were finally dispersed. Peneha, with numerous other natives, took the oath of allegiance to the Government. For a short time he lived at Waerenga-a-hika, and then was sent to Mangatu with some of his war comrades, and there established the Mangatu pa.
