CLOSING MOOTED.

RAHUI LEVEL CROSSING. OPPOSED BY COUNTY. Though the Rahui level crossing at Otaki was recently eliminated for main highway traffic by the construction of an overbridge, it has remained open because of the convenience of this access to the railway yards, milk factory, race course and other properties on the eastern side of the rail-vwy. -at the monthly meeting of the Horowhonua County Council last week a letter was received from the Commissioner of Transport, who pointed out that the continued use of the crossing by local traffic defeated the objects of the overbridge to a considerable extent. The council was asked for its views on the matter, the communication stating that if the crossing was closed the Main Highways Board would provide a suitable turn round at the northern end of the bridge.

The chairman (Mr. G. A. Monk) said that until such time as the turn on to the old road at the northern end of the bridge was improved, the council would have to protest against the closing of the crossing. Traffic would be in imminent danger in turning on to the old road. He did not think the council could consider the matter until the turn off was improved. , •Or. A. M. Colquhoun held that on race days in Otaki it would be impossible to make traffic turn there.

Several other members also spoke against the closing of the crossing. Cr. A. M. Atkins then moved that the council reply that it was not in the best interests of traffic to close the crossing. It was seconded by Cr. J. H, P. Higgins and carried.
