VALEDICTORY.
A large .gathering of officers of the combined staffs of the local post office took place recently for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr. J. W. Bateinan, who has been transferred ta Auckland. In addressing the assemblage, thi3 postmaster, Mr. E. E. Hirst, referred in high terms of the contribution made by Mr. Bateman in furthering the service rendered by the department in this area. Mr. Hirst stated that Mr. Bateman had applied for a transfer to Auckland in order that he might improve his educational knowledge both: inside and outside the department, and congratulated him upon his initiative.. The postmaster also referred to the good example set by Mr. Bateman, not. only in the discharge of his duties but. in other spheres. Mr. A. J. Jamieson,. line foreman, also spoke in high terms of Mr. Bateman's conduct, Avillingness and initiative, and wished him every success in his new sphere of activities.. Mr. B. M. Armstrong endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers and stated that Mr. Bateman's future progress would be followed with consider-' able interest by the members of the ■clerical staff at Levin. Mr. Hirst then attached a wristlet [watch to Mr. Bateman's arm, and asked him to accept the gift as a token of the esteem in which he was generally held. He trusted that the gift would serve as a remembrance of his association with the Levin post office an'l of the many departmental friends hi* was leaving behind him. Mr. Bateman thanked the officers for their gift, which he highly appreciated,, and for the kindly spirit which prompted the action. He stated that he would look back on his period of service at. Levin with considerable pleasure, and' thanked all officers for their assistances and co-operation.
