Geary had a short life. Swinging heavily at Ward, he was stumped. Walsh just survived the next ball and then skied a catch to Badcock in the outfield. The New Zealander was creeping toward his century when Dawkes played on to his wicket, leaving only Plamson to stay with Dempster, who was then 93. The latter reached his century in 175 minutes, but five minutes later lifted Ward into Badcock’s hands. He played a persistent and chanceless, but not really distinguished, innings, hitting 14 fours.
