CUSHION COVERS.

MADE FE'OM HANKIES.

You can - make attractive cushion covers from.various kinds of handkerchiefs. A particularly good idea is to use a big spotted cotton handkerchief and combine it with a little simple embroidery. Some of the spots must be encircled with daisy-stitch petals, in contrasting embroidery cotton, to turn them into flowers, with tiny curved stem-stitch stalks and daisy-stitch leaves on either side to complete them. If the spots are fairly sparse, you can turn every one> Into a flower; otherwise better results will be obtained by embroidering alternate ones, A large Paisley printed handkerchief can be turned into an unusual cover for a small cushion. The cushion pud is laid in the middle of the square and the coiners are folded over, envelopefashion, to meet in the centre. The sides are joined with over-sewing stitches in contrasting silk, and the plain borders of the handkerchief make an effective cross in the middle of the cushion. Miniature cushions are ideal for tucking comfortably into bed with an invalid who finds it difficult to settle down to sleep. Even the most wakeful mortal will be more inclined to rest if two or three are snuggled behind the back and so on.

A tiny cushion covered with peach pink satin, edged with a wisp of lace, suggests itself as a charming background for a still smaller square of lace-edged, linen or lawn, stitched on diamond-wise.
