AMERICA v. GERMANY

In the inter-zone final for the Davis Cup between America and Germany von Gramm (Germany) beat Grant (America) 6 —5, 6—2, 6—4; Budge (America) beat Henkel (Germany) 6 — 2, 6—l, 6 —3. Von Gramm .and Grant made a dour beginning, each testing out the other. The German was more aggressive and increased his severity in the second set. His only uncertainty was his backhand. The German’s relentlessness increased his mastery and He outwitted the American to sweep to victory.

Budge and Henkel opened with a long-range duel. Budge was definite master of strokes, whereas footfaulting unsteadied the German. Budge’s stroke supremacy was always manifest except -against Henkel’s lightning aces. Henkel’s best patch was the third set, but, he . lacked consistency in length.
