ROCHESTER (.Minnesota), July 18. Professor Picard, wearing a parachute and football headgear to protect him from the cold and in case of a bumpy landing, took off for the stratosphere at 4.8 p.m. (Australian time) in a unique gondola supported by SO tiny balloons. He is expected to ascend at mid-day ■flu Tuesday (Australian time), communicating with the ground crew by •radio. If experiments -with the multi-balloon -device are successful, he will attempt .later to ascend 16 miles.
