To commemorate the opening of the new SO-mile Moscow-Volga canal, enabling ships to reach Moscow from the Baltic, Caspian and White Seas, the Soviet has granted a free pardon to 55,000 convicts who worked on the job for five years. Trade unions have been ordered to find them immediate employment.
