Sidelights on the tipping system on oversea mailboats were revealed in the Country Court by a shipping clerk during the hearing of an action in which Anthony Darvall, employed by the Orient Steamship Company, gave evidence that the tips usually given by passengers to England were £5 to the table waiter, 30s to 40s the head waiter, 20s to 25s to the wine steward, £5 to the bedroom steward, 20s to the bathroom steward, 20s to 25s to each of the four lounge stewards, and 40s to the deck stewards who were indirectly tipped from tne sports fees.
