PRODUCE PRICES AT HOME

BUTTER AND CHEESE MARKETS QUIET.

The butter market opened to a gloomy week with an entire absence of demand, accompanied by a sharp break in values.

Holders are now becoming nervous as, notwithstanding the sound statistical position of the market, they arc anxious and keep on selling. Tooley Street merchants generally do not expect any turn in the market, lor at least a few weeks.

The cheese market is in sharp contrast with butter and continues firm, though there is a quiet undertone, yet the market is sufficiently strong lo warrant the maintenance of present values.

A. H. Turnbull and Co., Ltd., have received the fallowing cable from their principals, W. Weddel and Co., Ltd., dated London, September 4: — Both markets are quiet. Butter. Danish, 128 s per cwt.; i\ew Zealand, finest, 115 s; Kangaroo finest, 114 s. Cheese, New Zealand white, 70s per cwt.; New Zealand coloured, 68s. SHEEPSKINS, HIDE AND TALLOW SALES. Dalgcty and Co., Ltd., report:— The combined Wellington woolbrokers held their usual fortnightly sale of sheepskins, hides, tallow and sundries on Friday before a full attendance of exporters, tanners and the local trade. Sheepskins: Fair catalogues were submitted, values for sound pelted descriptions being fully firm on late rates. The demand for damaged, seedy ana inferior descriptions was irregular and prices were lower. Salted skins sold round about last quotations. Hides: There was good enquiry for all grades and weights, exporters and tanners buying freely. As compared with our last sale we found heavies and mediums I-8d to higher and lightweights 1-Sd higher. Kip and yearling sold well up to the level of; lute rates. Calf again met a weaker market, values declining kl.

Tallow: The market showed little variation on previous quotations, mixed selling to 20s (id per ewt. The range of prices is as follows; Sheepskins: Halfbred, 93d to 10 d; fine Xbred, lOd to 114 d; medium Xbred, 94d to 103 d; coarse Xbred, 9d to half wools, 7hd to Jo:]d; quarter wools, 54d to Sd; pelts, 24 d to sd. Salted at. each: Pelts, to 2s 3d; half wools, to 4s (Id; three-quarter wools, to 7s 4d; lull wools, to Ss 3d; extra large, to 9s.
