SNOW FALLS WIDESPREAD.

WINTRY WEATHER AT MARTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) 21ARTON, This Pay. Following a brief but intense electrical disturbance at. .11 o’clock last night, accompanied by a violent hailstorm, the temperature dropped sharply as the weather whipped to the south. Snow was falling- at midnight, but it cleared early this morning. However, the fall recommenced and daybreak revealed a snowy mantle an inch deep in Martou.

Despite the sodden state of the ground after a week’s rain it quickly thawed locally, but reports up country this me ruing state that it is stilt snowing at Huatorvillo township. The hills are deeply covered ami there are no indications yet as to how if will affect lambing, which is now in full swing. The severity of the weather change may he gauged by the fact that no snow lay at Marten following the last general storm,

The hitiugly cold conditions prevailing in Wairarapu for the past week culminated last (tight in a heavy fail of snow, which completely covers all lulls, including the low foothills on both sides of the valley.

After a week of tempestuous weather in southern Hawke's Bay, from Woodville to Takapau, experienced a very heavy snow fall last night, probably the worst for the past 25 years. [Starting about 5.30 p.m. it continued most of tho night and this morning in Dannevirke five inches of snow was lying on the ground, while at 3 a.m. it was still deeper. In the surrounding districts it was probably heavier. Tire whole countryside is covered and as lambing is in full swing the visitation is most inopportune. Telephone lines in the district are all disorganised, so it is impossible at present to obtain information as to how flocks have fared. The weather is now fine, though there is a possibility of further snow.

SNOW PALLS ON TARAEUAS. BITING WEATHER IN LEVIN. Levin did not escape the cold change in weather conditions which seem to have been experienced throughout the Dominion. Last evening a bitter southerley set in and with it intermittent showers of light rain. This morning the mantle of snow on the Tararuas, had increased, while further south it was noticed that the foothills had beer, bedecked with a sprinkling of white. Though it has cleared somewhat to-day, the wind continues and conditions remain unpleasant.

COLD SNAP IN WELLINGTON.

A culmination of the present cold snap was reached last night when there was a considerable fall of snow on all the hills around Wellington. During the course of some showers snow fell in Petone and on the low levels further up the Hutt Valley. The fall on the hills was much more extensive and reached lower down the levels than usually is the case, when periodically Wellington has snow in September. So far it has been bitterly and progressively cold. COLD SNAP IN FAR SOUTH. CAME AT BAD TIME FOR FARMERS. INVERCARGILL, Last Night. Four days of rough weather were followed to-day by falls of snow in Invercargill and in the country, but it soon disappeared in the city. A strong wind blew all day and it was very cold for this ' : nm of the year. There was a ligut coating of snow on the ground at midday and more fell late this afternoon. Reports from country districts indicate that snow was general throughout the province. The weather has broken at a bad time for farmers as the lambing season has begun. The snow started at Mossburn and Lumsden about seven o’clock this morning and there was three inches on the ground this evening. A sharp frost was experienced in those districts hist night. Conditions in Invercargill had improved this evening.

HEAVY SNOWFALL IN OTAGO. | FRUITGROWERS MAY SUFFER. DUNEDIN, Last Night. Cold and wintry conditions prevailed in Dunedin to-day. A heavy fall ul snow about mid-day was followed during the afternoon and evening by intermittent falls which coated rno surrounding hills in a mantle of white. The fall was general in most districts in Otago, being very heavy in the vicinity of Alexandra where it is still snowing but all roads are clear in the meantime. Fruitgrowers in Central Otago will be severely hit if a frost follows the snow as the apricots and other early fruit are at present in bloom. There are no signs of the weather clearing.
