RESTORING SALARY CUTS.
FIRST MEASURE WHEN HOUSE RESUMES.
WILL BE RESTROSPECTIVE IN ALL INSTANCES.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night.
Probably the first Bill of importance lo ho considered by the Bouse when it. resumes next Tuesday after the midwinter recess will be a Finance Bill providing for the full respiration of all cuts in salaries and wages.
Tlio Prime Minister (Bt. Hon. M. J. Ravage), in an interview to-night, stated that the Government desired to bring this legislation forward as soon us possible, so Unit linns awaiting its introduction before they restored cuts would know exactly where they stood. When the House met on Tuesday fo\nmi business would be taken, and then there would be an adjournment out of respect tor the memory of the late Sir William Mall Jones.
The Finance Bill would deni only with the restoration of salaries and wages. This would be made retrospec live to July 1, both inside the Civil Service and outside of it.
Pension increases and the payment of invalidity pensions would also date from July .1, but provision for them would be made in a separate Pensions BUI, which probably would not: he brought forward until the Budget had been presented. A Bill providing for the readjustment of mortgages will follow the Finance Bill, Mr. .Savage said, and then the way will be clear for the presentation of the Budget. That procedure may possibly be altered, but at present our desire is to put the Mortgage Bill through as quickly as possible. Questioned about the Budget, Mr. Savage repeated that the Government intended to honour its pledge to distribute taxation so that the main burden rested on the shoulders of those best able to bear it.
