DRUNK IN CHARGE OF MOTOR TRUCK.
NATIVE OFFENDER BEFORE THE COURT.
As a sequel to a collision with a telegraph pole in Mako Mako Road on May 23rd last, Kawaurukuroa Hanita was charged before M r J. 11. Salmon this morning with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor truck, not being the holder of a driver’s license and colliding with a pole causing uamago to the extent of £1 9s 4d. Constable Mcßae stated that about 4.40 p.m., on the date mentioned he was informed of an accident in Mako Mako Road and when he arrived at the scene he found defendant’s truck had run into a telegraph pole on the wrong side of the road. Hanita had said that his rvife was driving at the time, but admitted having been in charge of the vehicle while proceeding along Oxford Street and with that he had been charged. The sun was glaring badly at the time. Defendant’s wife held no license and neither did he. The Post and Telegraph Department claimed damage to the extent of £1 Os 4d and there were doctor’s expenses for examining defendant amounting to 10s 6d. Hanita pleaded guilty to the three charges and said that he was only earning £2 per -week and had to keep his wife and a large family. The Magistrate commented that Hanita had committee a series of offences which were usually punishable by heavy fines, but to impose them in his case would only be inflicting hardship or. his Avife and children. He would jbe placed on probation and prevented fiom obtaining a license for twel\ T e months on the charge of intoxication, convicted and ordered to pay costs 10s for having no license, and convicted mid ordered to pay costs amounting to 10s and damage of £1 9s 4d on the third charge. He was also to pay the doctor’s expenses.
