DEFENCE OF EMPIRE.
REMITS BEFORE R.S.A. CONFERENCE. INCREASED MEASURES ADVOCATED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A vigorous advocacy of increased measures for defence throughout the Empire as a. sure means of maintaining world peace came from delegates to the New Zealand R.S.A. Conference when the re-affirmation of the remit carried a year ago was recommended by a subcommittee. Speakers were unanimously in favour of increased defence, but there was a difference of opinion as to whether the Empire should rely on collective security with the commonwealth of nations or on a wider collective security of the League of Nations. Last year’s resolution urged on tne Government the vital necessity of bringing our sea, land and air forceto a slate commensurate with our responsibilities, both to New Zealand and the Empire and to devote; greater attention to the training; of leaders, and in the event of war conscript the whole of the country’s economic resources as well as man power. To this, was added this year’s presentation by Mr Leadley, Christchurch;—“That in view of the unsettled state of world affairs and in view of the Prime Minister’s declaration that the first line of defence for New Zealand should be increased, a population scheme of planned immigration from Great Britain should oe inaugurated as soon as possible, and that New Zealand should support the re-constructed League of Nations all rnembeis of which would mutually covenant to apply full economic and military sanctions against a declared aggressor.
