OVERLOADED BUS.
CHARGE AGAINST DRIVER. Charging him with exceeding- the number of passengers he was iicensed to carry, the Main Highways Board proceeded against William Swan at the monthly sitting of the Levin Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mr J. 11. Salmon, S.M. Inspector .1, L, Ainsworth, who appeared for the Board, stated that for some time dances had been held in Levin on Saturday nights and in order to swell the attendance the organisers oi the 1 unctions had hired defendant’s bus to bring dancers from Foxton and Shannon to Levin, On May 23rd last, as a result of complaints of overloading, a check up was made in Queen Street while the bus was en route to the dance and it was found to be carrying 40 passengers. That number did not include seven young- men who had alighted from the vehicle just prior to its being stopped. The bus was licensed to carry only 27 passengers. After being caught, Swan arranged with another to come over and take the overload back. The case was the most serious of overloading since the Board had commenced operations. Defendant forwarded a letter of explanation and admitted the breach. He was convicted and lined £3 with costs amounting to 17s fid. ■
