PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH.

WELLINGTON V, AUCKLAND. FORMER BATTING ON SODDEN WICKET. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day.

Winning the toss Wellington elected to bat, on a sodden wicket at the Basin Reserve against Auckland in the Plunket Shield fixture. The morning dullness was succeeded by bright sunshine which promised to make conditions ideal in the afternoon. The wicket, however, will probably become trickv later. The outfield was slow at the start of play which was abandoned on the first two days and this morning there was-no play until 11.30 a.m. Auckland is faced with the difficult task of an outright win in two days to win the Shield. Wellington opened with Moloney and Parsloe facing the bowling of Cowie and Townsend. Parsloe and Moloney, playing careful cricket, found difficulty in getting the ball away and runs came at funeral pace. After eight overs had been bowled for nine rims, which included six extras, Garrard relieved Cowie at the north end. Townsend twice narrowly missed getting a wicket in one over. Parsloe brightened play by bitting a three off; Townsend to mid-off and lifting Garrard to raid-on, the first four of the innings.

Fifty rvero put up in just under an hour. Two overs later. Parsloe calling for a short run, had a wicket throwm down. Ell replaced him. Moloney with his score 25 entered the doldrums. Ell did not fare better. Cow;c, who had bowled four overs at a cost of two when relieved by Garrard, took over again when Garrard had bowled 12 overs for .’>l. With the (ifth ball of his maiden over he dismissed Ell, who gave an easy catcli to Fustics at silly mid-on.

At lunch the score was d(i for two wickets. Detailed Scores:— Moloney, not out Parsloe, run out Ell, c Postles, b Cowie r > O’Brien, not out 1 Extras Total l'°r 2 wickets bb
