The reason officially given is: “Maintenance of the European situation and the retention of European friendships.” Certain members of the Fascist Grand Council, especially Marshall de Bono, are reportedly urging the necessity of a speedy compromise in respect of Abyssinia. Reports circulating in (Paris state that the Pope has again intervened to secure peace. . The newspaper POuevre, detailing the new compromise scheme, says that the Vatican is appealing to Paris and London to secure its acceptance on a basis of the negotiations. It is understood the latest scheme contemplates the neutralisation of Abyssinia with an international, nolj Itai'lian, police force and no provision for the Italian colonisation zone, but the Emperor is ,to permit Europeans to settle in the couutry >

TEMPORARY HALT IN ITALIAN DRIVE.

The Abyssinians, fulfilling their determination to send two soldiers to the front for every Italian shipped to Africa, are rushing troops to Ogaden to stem the Italian drive, which is temporarily halted owing to rains. It is claimed that the camel corps ambushed and indicted heavy casualties on the Italians near Negelli Ras Desta’s followers, hiding in daytime in well-provisioned caves, sally out at night and harass the Italians’ lengthy communications, the vulnerability of which is causing anxiety. The New Zealand missionaries, .Messrs Roke and Mitchell, are escorting their wivos to Addis Ababa after leaving their stations at Sidamo. Afterwards they will return to their duties.

MUSSOLINI ADDRESSES GENERALS.

Mussolini addressed 92 generals filling the Italian commands. This is interpreted as portending reorganisation of tho home forces. Later he presided at a meeting of the Supremo Defence Council, when various measures for tightening up the restriction of imports and preventing the sale of luxuries were introduced.
