CRIMEAN VETERAN PASSES.
SERGEANT-MAJOR BEZAR
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 6.
The death has occurred of Mr. Edwin Bezar, an ex-sergeant-major of the 57th West Middlesex Regiment, known as the "Diehards," in his 97th year. The "Diehards'' took an active part in suppressing that section of the Maori rebellion which kept the settlers of the Taranaki province in a fever of unrest in the early GO's.
Sergeant-Major Bezar served in the Crimea with the Wiltshire Regiment and was transferred to the "Diehards" in 1857 and served at Aden during the Indian Mutiny. Later in 18G0, he went to India, whence the regiment was despatched the same year to New Zealand. When, in 18GG, the 57th. were recalled to England he took his discharge in the colony as a colour-sergeant. When, in ISGS, the Maoris again threatened trouble on the West Coast he was appointed sergeantmajor in the Wanganui district and remained with the Defence Department until 1892, when he retired. He had lived in Wellington ever since.
