WEST COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS

NOTES FROM THE SHANNON MEETING.

TIMES LIKELY TO EE ADOPTED AS STANDARDS.

In consideration of the fact that

three West Coast Championship events

were included upon the programme and the general high standard set throughout by the competitors, the measure of support accorded by the public to the sports meeting conducted on the Shannon Domain on Saturday after-

noon last was disappointingly small. Some dissatisfaction has also been expressed at the lack of support from Levin athletes and cyclists, but it must Abe pointed out in this respect that the majority of Levin club-members being engaged in business pursuits, Saturday afternoon is for them, a particularly awkward time to get away. Hence the lack of support must not be construed as lack of interest, but ratber as sheer misfortune.

In the ten mile cycle championship on Saturday, Jack Wade, of Wanganui, last year’s winner, was forced to bow to the superior riding of the Palmerstouian, Earl Lawrence, who last year secured second place in this event. Wade was also last year’s winner of the 1000 metres championship, and this year retains the title, his time for the final 220 yards sprint in this event being 14'£ secs.

In the 1000 metres time trial, last year’s holder, A. Hansen (Wanganui) was, with Imin. 25 see. relegated to fourth place, Wade and Lawrence sharing the honours, each having covered the distance in 1 min. 24 sec. A feature of the Shannon fixture was the riding of M. Green, the 16-year-old Hawera competitor, who seems well in the running for the West Coast Junior Championship, held last year by J. Bourke. also of Hawera. It is understood that, provided that the officials can supply the necessary details, the times established on Saturday will be adopted as standards for the North Island West Coast Championships, Incidentally, it is held that the Wanganui track, largely by reason of its high banking, is too fast f®r championship standards, by comparison with tracks of other centres. It is maintained that the only other trad:,

however, on (he AVest Coast where the Shannon times might be bettered is that of Levin, and hence the fixture on Wednesday evening next, February 12th, at which both AVade ami Lawrence have signified their intention of r'nling, should be of especial interest.
