Sir John Orr, in a speech at the Farmers' Club, elaborated the idea of a farming boom if the pour had an adequate dint. He said that approxi-j mately 4,500,000 people arc existing on an average of only -Js a week each IV-r food and are definitely suffering from a deliciency of health giving sub stances. Their consumption of meal, eggs, fruit, and vegetables must be increased by from I'2 to 25 per cent, in order to bring their diets to me standard required for health. Twice that increase would be required to bring their diet to the standard of the well-to-do classes. There was a great national need for increased production of foodstuffs, which must be made available to the poor at below existing prices, by means of a subsidy if necessary.
