No shipments of Australian meat arrived in London over the week-end, the nearest arrival being the Port Gisfoorne on February 6.
The Australian Associated Press Understands that Australian firms today despatched large consignments to the provinces but are apprehensive lest the strike spread to the railway and dock workers.
Some Smithfield operators are talking of military convoys for meat unless the strike is promptly settled. The only effect on the Stock Exchange was falls of (id on .Smithfield and Argentine ordinary shares. BOOKERS REFUSE TO UNLOAD MEAT. Received Tuesday, 10.30 p.m. LONDON, February 4. Smithfield pickets at 3 a.m. visited •some of the riverside wharves where Smithfield meat was being unloaded and persuaded the dockers to cease work., The pickets did not interfere at -the wharves where supplies for smaller markets outside London were being unloaded. Smithfield was strongly picketed all night to prevent meat arrivals. Extra police have been drafted in. BUTTER NOT AFFECTED. The Smithfield Strike Committee .-claims that the men employed in tho .cold stores and on the wharves declared themselves unwilling to handle meat. The decision does not affect butter or other perishable goods. The men •claim there was no use pursuing the talks which had proceeded fruitlessly for eight months. Most of the employers sympathise with us and we will not me intimidated by others. The effects of the strike are felt in Southampton where it was decided to leave 1400 tons of Argentine chilled meat aboard the Alcantara which arrived on February 3rd.
