SETTLERS MAROONED.

WORST FLOOD IN YEARS AT RANGIOTU. HERDS MAY BE DROWNED BY MORNING. RANGIOTTJ, Midnight. The worst flood for many years is at present being experienced by settlers who have their homesteads on the river banks between Rangiotu and Rangitane and so ' suddenly did the water descend on to the area that no time was given in which stock could he removed to safety. The homes of Messrs. Russell, Jenkins, McCallum, Moore (2), Kelly, Griffin, Fawcett, Barnes, Ware, Alve, Harrison and Lett are surrounded and the

families are unable to leave. Their outlook this afternoon was a black one as the Manawatu was continuing to pour over. Herds are standing in water and it is feared morning will reveal that many cows have been drowned. Messrs. Harrison and Lett are reported to have already lost 25 of their herd.
