RACING AT OTAKI TO-MORROW.

Useful Form Guide For Holiday Meetings. , The Fields In Review. The usual two-day spring fixture of the Otaki Maori Eacing Club was altered this year, one day being held at the usual period and the other date arranged for tomorrow. This latter meeting provides an excellent opportunity for an outing for a number of the horses engaged during the holiday period and the form in consequence will be of Dominion wide interest. The response from owners has been most encouraging and with good average fields it' only needs fine weather to ensure a successful meeting.

The track is reported to be in excellent order and interesting sport is promised. The club will use the. single pool ibetting system with two dividends in fields of five or more runners. A convenient train service has Ibeen announced and the fixture will attract, a large number of Wellington race-goers while Levin will be well represented in the attendance. FORM GUIDE. The numbers preceding the names of the runners in the list of acceptors below denotes how each horse has run in its last four starts at totalisator meetings in New Zealand: (1) is shown for a win, (2) for second, >(3) for third, (0) unplaced, and (*) not started during the period from which the guide is compiled, i.e., August Ist., to date.

A fairly even field has accepted for the opening race and it is clillicult to name the actual favourite at this stage. Petrarch is the most recent winner and his ability to jump will bring him good support. The hurdles at Otaki are easy and this will be in Midacro’* favour. He does not jump too safely but has the speed and he has an opportunity to-morrow. Spender has his Fetlding second to recommend him and Gaswyn and Otaura King, second and third at Levin, arc distinct possibilities. Battleground ran into a place a* the last meeting on the course and he will appeal most of those on the minimum mark. The trio to command most respect will probably be Miclacre, Petrarch,

The maiden platers are not a very good lot if past form counts for any thing and the only runner with a re cent placing is (.farter 'Red. If he is to ever win he looks to hav t e a real opportunity here. .Myriam is well sea soned and overdue for a winning turn and it may ho that he will he equal to the effort required to-morrow. Tommy Atkins is one likely to improve but with one exception, reliable form is so conspicuously absent that the posting of riders and the draw for positions may prove more helpful that the performances of the past. The popular candidates will probably include Garter Red, Myriam, Tommy Atkins.

vuuv oir * There is a good deal of form in tins event in which two of the acceptors have prior engagements. State Bank may possibly start here in which case he will be well supported, if not the actual favourite. Confiscation is in the right form and will only need some of the luck of the running to be handy while Aleides has performed well enough recently to enter into the calculations. Treasure Hunt and The [ma<ge to a lesser degree will have their supporters while Nightlass and Consummation have best credentials of the remainder. In what looks like be-

ing a fairly good betting race there may be most money for Alcides, State Bank, Confiscation.

Only eihgt have accepted for the principal race but a fairly good contest is promised. Might is a first-class middle distance performer but has im yet raced this term so that he may be in need of the race. Princess, Doreen at her best would make a particular appeal but she ran unplaced at Wellington and Riccarton and it is difficult to get a lino on her prospects. At this stage she does not read as well as Gay Boy who lias now become solid and may possibly go on to big handicaps. .Semper Paratus will likely be passed over in favour of Hunting lodge who has proved fairly consistent this season and her most recent effort produced a third to Gay Boy at Levin. Sunee, credited with two thirds at the recent Wellington fixture, failed to pay at L.'hristclum-h but will have an opportunity to make amends here. Eminent is liable to turn up at any time but has little to recommend him while Rompalong will have to show a big improvement to have a winning chance. The unexpected will sometimes happen but it would not feel safe 1o go past Gay Boy Hunting Lodge,

Lacing on his own truck, State Haul; a winner at the recent Levin meeting, will be the principal choice oJ speculators if this event is preferred to his Inter engagement. Acceptable has four unplaced performances in a row but these efforts were in much better company and he will have to be kept on the right side in this class. I'ukeko has nothing recent to recommend him !but Whyte Melville's second at Levin was good enough to warrant support here. Going Gay lias his liiccarton win to say that he will be troublesome while All .Spirit and Gora■n) have nothing to recommend them, though at their best on the day would have io lie treated with respect. Terry will find favour of the others. The trio to which most money will be entrusted will possibly be

State Bank, Whyte Melville, Acceptable,

lu the second open race there is uphill eight acceptors with Golden Hair inv pride of place. 80 far as placed form goes she lias nothing to recommend her hut her class may stand to her. .Jubilee Hong has developed into it solid sprinter and looks to be fairly •veil placed here. After Money has no recent form but Sanguine King rac*>d well enough at the last fixture on this course to be counted as a prospect. Round Score has produced some determined finishing efforts that will prove hard to stave off and at this distance he reads as the best proposition. The right horseman will be needed to assist him to success. Hem per Iharatus and Red Hun have very little to recommend them but JUiss Hushabye looks a real danger, for her third at Levin, was a most creditable effort for a green horse. The machine may indicate a preference being shown for Round Score, Jubilee Song, Sanguine King.

4 Q RAHUI HACK HANDICAP, Of £BS. One Mile. 0000 Chaste 8 8 • 0130 Going 1 Gay 8 7 00 King’s Lancer 8 5 0000 Dorado 8 3 00 Whetuma 8 2 0000 Umpire 8 0 00 Pawky 8 0 0000 Imasurvey 8 0 0000 Golden Enterprise 8 0 0000 Earl Colossus 8 0 0000 Sunder 8 0

There is almost a complete absence of recent placed form in the hack distance event and the winner is well concealed. All the acceptors have had recent racing and according to the handicapper’s estimates there is not much picking and choosing for there is only a matter of eight pounds between the top and bottom of the handicap. One of them has to win. it and the public may select them in the following order Going Gay, Dorado, Umpire. 445 REKE EEKE HACK HANDICAP, of £75; Six Furlongs.

Form horse's in the concluding race are Bazaine, Lifeguard, Boomerang, and Terry with Beau Gallante and Bound Up likely improvers. There is nothing to suggest the winner coming from the minimum mark and in breaking for evens punters may decide to support Bazaine, • Boomerang, Lifeguard.

AWAPUNI TRACK WORK The -weather was fine and the course in good order for yesterday’s track work at Awapuni, and although a number of Otaki candidates were restricted to light tasks, a number of them were scut along against, the watch. The times were not particularly fast, but the horses were required to cover extra ground, the flags being on the outside of the course proper. Round Score (K. Reed) and Hunting Lodge (S. Anderson) were galloped seven furlongs. They went away together but they had not gone far before Hunting Lodge was setting the pace. Hunting Lodge was four lengths to the good at the three-furlong peg, the first half-mile taking 53 -msec. They maintained this pace to the straight, where Round Scon; began to close the gap, finishing well a couple of lengths behind Hunting Lodge, it was a good gallop by both horses, the full distance being run in 1.34 1--5. King’s Lancer (Brown) was just in front of Frugal (0. Taltcrsall) at the end of seven furlongs cut out in 1.35 3-5. King’s Lancer was going along easily at the finish. Dawning Light showed the way to the Colossus colt in a five-furlong flutter which occupied 1.8 3-5. -Merry Night (Anderson) and a Grand Knight colt were together at the end of six furlongs, the last five of which took 1.1), and both galloped at t (‘actively. ’figer Bill (Thomas) and Kitty Quinn (A. -McDonald) were companions over four schooling fences, Kitty Quinn giving a very good account of herself for a novice. Laggard and Star Beam sprinted three furlongs in 3!) l-ssec, Star Beam (a nice galloper) being a length tothe good at the post. Treasure Hunt was worked on the plough and he started scratchily, but improved as he wanned up. Finnesko and Rompalong were galloped six furlongs on the plough, which was in great order, and they took .1.38 d o for the distance.

La Crown, on the course proper, sprinted six furlongs in 1.22, and Vonia Park was a tick inside this time, requirng I.S 1-5 for the last live furlongs. Tandm and Petrarch were sent over four hurdles, the former jumping brilliantly, while Petrarch look things nil her easily. Wagner and Black Fox wen* not required to do their best tit tiny stage of an easy six on the course proper. Both loo;; to be in great condition. Happy Hunting (L. ii. .ionesj, Barley Almond (S. Anderson) and Pound Up (\V. E. Pine) finished in that order at the end of live furlongs ou the plough, Happy llunlleg’s time being 1,1. Corrohoree looks to be none Hie worse for his races at Woodv’uC. His task yesterday was an easy one. about three-quarter pace on the course pro per.
