CALF CLUB.

Calf judging in the northern group of the Horowheuua Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Association took place at Shannon School on Friday afternoon. There was a large entry of calves, many of which were in excellent condition showing that the lessons learned from year year are being adopted by the pupils, and in a wider measure by the farmers who breed the calves. The judging was caried out by Mr R. L. Tippler and resulted as follows: — • i

This year the association introduced a lamb rearing competition and this was a popular event in the Northern Group. The judge was Mr. Munford, of Shannon, the results being us follows:

Shannon: Jean Cameron 1; Norman Bleakley 2; Merle Lang 3, Moutoa: Edward Barber 1; Brian Barber 2; Russell Burse 3. Others to enter calves were Beryl Graham, Bob Barnett, Maurice Rolston; Eoycc Murray, Janies Carter, Jaihes Moynihan, Muriel Munford, Dorothy Best, Joyce Rolston, Jeff Law, Rachel Long, Gloria Doyle, Bob Carter, Annette Mitchell. After the judging Mr. R. L. Tippler addressed the pupils upon the values of rearing only the best of stock, and stressed the fact that it was by doing such work that the breed of animals could be improved. The man who made no effort to improve his herd was a lazy man and a poor farmer. He then demonstrated with the aid of charts and a cow, the points to be observed in a good cow. Mr, A. J. Galpin, from the Department of Agriculture, Palmerston North, addressed the gathering on the value of right feeding, pointing out that tender young grass was more nutritious than tall seeded pasture. After the judging function the members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union provided afternoon tea for competitors and visitors, and an enjoyable time was spent in one of the class rooms by the large assembly. The president, Mr. R. L. Tippler, thanked the ladies and all who had assisted in make the event one of the most successful held in Shannon.
