ELECTION CAMPAIGN CONCLUDES.

MR. ORAM ADDRESSES AN ATTENTIVE AUDIENCE.

Last evening the Democrat candi date for Alanawatu, Air. AI. H. Oram, addressed one of the best humoured meetings held in Levin during the present campaign. The Century Hall was well filled and the speaker was given a particularly attentive hearing, his remarks, being frequently punctuated with applause, while there were few interjections. Air. F. E. Trim occupied the chair and after presenting the speaker introduced Airs. Oram to the electors amidst applause. Air. Oram dealt mainly with the financial proposals of th© Democrat Party and showed convincingly how it was possible when the unemployed loan of £8,000,000 had been borrowed that it was possible to considerably reduce taxation, provide the additional schemes promised and return the unemployed to work at normal rates of pay. He pointed out that Id of the present unemployment tax of 6d in £1 would be hypothecated and was sufficient to pay the interest and sinking fund on the proposed loan. That money would be used in a vigorous scheme of Public Works, through local bodies and in stimulation of private enterprise, by a limited guarantee of capital, thus following a sane policy, not in penpetuation of palliatives, but of curing the position. At the conclusion a large number of questions were asked and answered by the speaker, after which Air. Oram thanked the electors throughout the whole of the constituency for the hearing that he had received. On the motion of Air. F. E. Parker, seconded by Air. H. AlcDonald, the candidate was accorded a hearty vote of thanks amidst applause. .A similar compliment to the chair concluded the meeting.

COLONEL CLOSEY’S FINAL MEETING.

At the Regent theatre last evening Colonel S. J. E. Closey addressed the audience, the programme having been moved forward. The speaker emphasised the distressing feature of political history that no great reform or ideal had been produced from within Parliament in spite of the great resources for reading and study. In answer to a question, the candidate stated that he -was strongly ,opposed to the sales tax which was wrongly named. It w r as really a new tariff since it was paid on stock going into the shop and really on sales. The true sales tax was applied at the point of sale. The effet. c of the tax was to slowulown all business and by the law of diminishing returns it did more injury than any other tax.

} On the motion, of Mr Bartholomew, seconded by Mr. J. Bowatcr, a hearty vote of thanks was passed. Miss H. E. Bowen, a Borough Councillor, presided, and said in her introduction that the qualities for which the speaker had been commended in war histories —great courage and determination and intellectual ability — should prove of value in the political fight now coming upon the nation.
