OTAKI NOTES.

s Wednesday. D. Judd (Otaki) will be a competitor in the Wellington road race on Saturday. The distance to be covered is fifty miles. Heavy rain, which will have a beneficial effect on pastures, fell in Otaki and district yesterday. Unfortunately, however, it was accompanied by a very cold snap. Mrs. Slight, one of the oldest residents of the district, passed away at Paekakariki on Sunday night. The deceased, who was 89 years of age, was buried to-day. The funeral of the late Miss Josephine Tere Turu took place at Otaki yesterday and despite the inclement weather was well attended. The ceremony at the Church and graveside was conducted bv the Rev. Father Riordan.

The death occurred at Waikanae yesterday of Mrs. Horace Freeman, one of the best known residents of the district. The deceased, who was 71 years of age, leaves a husband and family of four sons to mourn their loss. The funeral- will take place at Waikanae this afternoon.

At the Otaki Poliee Court on Monday John Dwyer and Walter Mack appeared on charges of *'drunkenness. Each was fined oh by Mr. H. Nicolson, the presiding J.P. Constable Satherley stated that he had occasion to arrest Dwyer at Otaki Eailway and Mack in Main Street. Both were, he said, well under the influence of liquor.

The death occurred at Paraparaumu on Saturday of Mr. George James Langley, aged 74 years. The deceased was well known on this coast and for some time was a resident of Foxton. The funeral took place yesterday. Mr Langley was born in Wellington, and his parents were pioneers, living at Lowry Bay. He acoempanied his parents to the Foxton district as a youth, and later joined his brother as a caterer, and conducted a boarding house at the local seaside, subsequently removing to Paraparaumu. Mr. Langley was unmarried. Mr. Walter Langley and Mrs. Arnold (Onehunga) are brother and sister.
