ONLY THE BEST IS GOOD ENOUGH.
BRITAIN'S ATTITUDE TO DOMINION. GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S ADDRESS
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night.
In opening the Auckland Winter Show to-night the Governor-General said: "The purport of a show such ns this is the improvement and maintenance of the high quality of our industries. The thing always to strive for is the best and not to be bothered with second-grade and third-grade. If we can get the best we will always find a market.
"f do not intend to plunge into a political discussion," said his Excellency. "That is for the statesmen who govern this country. I can, however, tell you from my own knowledge that in the Home country the greatest sym pathy is being felt for New Zealand, which the people at Home know to be tho Britain of the South Seas, the most loyal Dominion, and of the greatest help to the .Mother Country in a time of crisis. The Home Government—l speak from a Home viewpoint—has got to take an interest in the Home producers as much as in tho Empire producer. I know it is their feeling that they wish to draw both closer together, if it is possible to do so, and to bring prosperity to the producers of England and the Dominions also; but there arc difficulties —balance of trade, the textile industry, the heavy industries, coal —a hundred-and-one interests all tend to merge and make some of these problems difficult of solution." As his listeners knew, said his* Excellency, Britain has been somewhat late in adopting its present policy. Some people had said the Ottawa agreements were not perfect. It was difficult to make anything perfect at the first trial, but the statesmen of the Dominions and others were doing their utmost to lay the foundation of prosperity for the future.
