CROSSBRED IN DEMAND

LONDON JULY SERIES OPEN

The July series of wool sales have opened with brisk competition. Merinos have advanced 7A to 15 per cent, and crossbreds 71 to 10 per cent, on closing rates of the May series. The offerings catalogued for the opening sale wore 5037 bales, including 5042 bales New Zeaalnd. and a moderate miscellaneous selection.

About 7:250 bales of Austrian and New Zealand were sold.

The buyers' benches were crowded, and keen Home and Continental coinpetition was experienced, especially for line Merinos.

The market showed a general advance, as compared wilii the May closing rates. Merinos, greasy, wore .10 and occasionally 15 per cent, dearer; medium Merinos 5 to 10 per cent, and scoureds 70 to 10 per cent, dearer. Crossbreds, fine, were 10 per cent., medium to coarse 7A per cent., all dearer. Slipes showed an advance of 7] per cent, to 10 per cent. New Zealand greasy crossbred, "Limestone Downs," sold at lid highest and 8 3-Sd average. The same brands halfbred sold 13d highest, and 12Ad average. Private Advices KEEN COMPETITION. Levin and Co.. Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated July 9:—The auctions opened here to-day with a large attendance of Home and Continental buyers. Keen competition, particularly from Bradford. As at present arranged the sales will close on July 25. Compared with the closing rates of last sale, we quote: Greasy Merino, best lAd per lb. higher, average lAd; fine half bred*, 50/50's, Id to LAd; extra fine crossbreds, 48/50's, id; fine, 40/48's, -Id; medium, 44/40's. Ad; coarse, 40/44's, Id; low, 30/40's. Ad; slipe halfbred lambs, 4d to -}d; medium and coarse slipes, Ad to fd; scoured Merinos, Id, all higher. The wool sales opened before a larger attendance of buyers than usual. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., has received the following advice from its* London house, dated June 9:—There was a good attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home and Continental buyers being' keen. As compared with last sales' closing rates, prices arc higher 2d to 2|d per lb. for greasy Merino, higher Id to Ud per lb. for scoured Merino, Id per lb. higher for fine crossbred, and Jd per lb. higher for medium and coarse greasy crossbred, also crossbred slipe. Murray, Roberts, and Co., Ltd., are in receipt of the following wool market cablegram from their London agents, dated 9th inst:—"Sales have opened with a good tone, competition keen. Yorkshire buyers principal operators and buying freely. Continental buyers operating moderately. Compared with last London sale's closing greasy Merino, wool suitable for Yorkshire, advanced 15 per cent.; greasy Merino, other descriptions, advanced 10 per cent.; scoured Merino advanced 71 per cent.; crossbred greasy fine advanced 10 per cent.; crossbred greasy coarse to medium advanced 7i per cent.; slipe crossbred and crossbred scoured market firm.
