HOROWHENUA COUNTY.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. At the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County {Council on Saturday, the Engineer (Mr J. T. M, Brewster) gave the following report for the past month: —• Tokomlaru Riding. —The crusher is breaking metal at Tokomaru river foxmaintenance of the district roads. Low places in metal (pavement on AshleaTemukanui and Tokomaru-Poplar roads have keen raised with pit metal from the County reserve at Tokomaru. Small slips and (washouts on Shannon East and other hill rofads have received attention. The grader has been over various district roads as required. Wirokino Riding. —General maintenance has been attended to in this Riding. The metalling of 32 chains at north end of Hokio-Waitarere completed. The total, metal put H the road is 294 cubic yards. Mal tenance metal has been put on vaH ous district roads, where required. r IH grader has been at work on distrß roads. A half bridge on Gladstone roH has been renewed. ■ Otaki Riding. —Maintenance me fit*”* has been put on Waikawa Beach Road> Heavy rains caused flooding in Waitohu Valley. The culverts uixder this road are nearly all too small to carry water during heavy rains and the loss of metal from the road is a considerable item. I would recommend that at least some of the culverts should be replaced with pipes of lax-ger diameter to deal (with the water. Cuttings on the western end of Waikawa Beach ;oad have been widened. Te Horo Riding. —'Small slips have been cleared from Otaki Gprgc road and water channels attended to. Slips Txave also been cleared from Mangaone road. The heavy grader has raked in metal on roads in the northern end of the RidingMain Highways. —All main highways are in reasonable condition. The longitudinal (planks have been put on Otaki river bridge and Ohau bridge is under way. Materials arc on order for top dressing, three miles of No. 1 main highway. As soon as approved proposals come to hand tenders will be invited for construction works on No. 60 Main Highway. Unemployment Relief. —’Levin: Comity work, 18 men, £24 14s lOd; over the fence, lild men, 80 fanners, £l3B Os 9d; Waikanae: County work, 8 men, £il I:2s 6d; over the fence, 1 man, 1 farmer, £l;' Shannon: County work, 3 men, £4; total, £T79 8s Id. Machinery.—The whole of the plant is now in good working order and ready for the season’s work. The back rolls of the heavy roller have been changed round to equalise wear. The right hand roll had diminished to half thickness caused by wear when roll skids and heavy pull when scarifying.
