Eucharistic Congress At Buenos Aires

Under a broiling Argentine springtime sun, 500,000 of the Roman Catholic Church’s faithful assembled yesterday to partake in the solemnity of Pontiticial High Mass. So terrific was the heat in the open-air cathedral that 400 women and girls collapsed. Laymen and priests alike were permitted to cover their heads against the sun. Palermo Park, a huge tract of the Bio de la Plata, was crowded far beyond me 250,000 seats erected for the Eucharistic Congress, the congregation converging at the 105-foot Cross in the centre of Avnida Alvear. Bishop O’Rihuelay, of AJicatc, Spain, officiated at mass in place of the Papal Legate, Cardinal Pacelli, who officially opened the recently-constructed Church of Santora Adelima. A great sea of humanity congregated in Palermo Park on Saturday afternoon to hear Monseigneur Fasonno, Archbishop of Santa Fe, Argentina, speak on the third theme of the International Eucharistic Congress. The theme was Christ the King in the history of Latin America and especially in the Argentine Republic. The Congress will end on Sunday in a great procession of the Holy Sacrament. Pope Pius will impart the Benediction at the closing of the Congress by radio.
