BYRD BACK AT MAIN BASE.
END OF VIGIL THAT LASTED ALMOST SEVEN MONTHS. TRIP MADE BY PLANE. (By Telegraph-Press Assn.-CopyrighA). Received Sunday, 7 p.m, NEW YORK, Oct. 13. A radio message from Little America states that, taking advantage of a temporary break in the weather, an aeroplane on Friday flew to the Bolling advance base and immediately returned with Rear-Admiral Byrd. The flight w T as made in quick time, although the pilot, Bill Bowlin, spent half-an-hour hovering over the white barrier before he was able to pick out the hut. Byrd left here on March 25 and lacked 12 days for spending seven months’ vigil in weather observations. On his return to camp he appeared to have recovered from the illness that made a rescue party necessary. His face has filled out and most of his strength has returned. Dr. Poulter accompanied Byrd on the return journey. As their leader stepped from the plane, all members of the expedition crowded round him. - His long hair, uncut since he left, appeared greyer, but he was in excellent spirits and greeted each man by name and thanked them for carrying on the expedition while he had gone. The flight took only a few hours, Bowlin departing at 10 in the morning and returning at 2.20 in the afternoon.
