CURLS AND SKINS.

EXPERT HAIR-CUTTING.

HGW TO APPLY FACE CREAM.

LONDON, July 13

The curly coiffure is extremely fashionable. Golden, silver and burnished copper curls peep out from under wide, shady brims or cover one side of the head when a perky, set-at-an-ang'le cap is worn. Usually these curls look as soft as a child’s and yet utterly sophisticated, and one wonders just how they are achieved on heads that nature only endowed with the dankest locks.

The first and most important thing is correct cutting by an expert. If the hair is long, you must explain that you want it cut for curling. It will then be reduced in length to about three inches from the hair-line . on the neck and taking small sections, the hairdresser will proceed to taper them in varying (from one to throe inches. This will provide uneven ends that will curl easily. If the hair is shingled you must persevere through that trying period of “growing out” until the desired three inches are achieved, and have the hair “cut for curling,” which is the main secret of a successfully curly coilfure.

CURLS FO R ALL AG E S

When having the hair permanently waved explain that you want the ends curled. The hair will then be baked a little longer at the ends than on the top. This will make the ends wave tightly, while the top falls softly and naturally. Do not be afraid to brush curls, which look twice as attractive with a natural sheen and can bo put into place again by brushing round the finger or a pencil. (Paris is drawing the hair nearly up to the crown of the head with a bunch of curls that remind one of Greek pictures. Some smart women who like to be different are sweeping their cuils to the back of the neck, leaving the head smooth. Others wear a triple row of curls above the nape of the neck.

The older woman with white hair looks charming with a curled coiffure but she should set the line of the curls fairly hijgh. Ouids clustering tightly to the nape of the neck are for youth only. But whether you wear curls or not, the way you wear your hair is all a matter of taste, and a good hairdresser need have very little to do with the type of hair with which you started life. OARE OF THE COMPLEXION. Equal'to hair in importance, and the ease with which one can control it, is the complexion. The shape of the nose ai;d mouth and the colour of the eyes as provided by nature are bettor left alone, but in these modern times, with every sort of cosmetic available, there is no excuse for poor complexions and -ungroomed faces. Practically every woman uses some sort of cream for the face, but too often she is not suflkently careful in using the right cream, and even more casual in the way she applies it.

First discover what type of skin you have—a dry skin, oily skin, or a normal skin. (Blondes, as a rule, have a dry skin, and the finer the texture of these dry skins the more care they need.

.Cold cream should be used, for cleansing whenever a dry skin has been exposed to hot sunshine or cold winds. Vanishing creams are often harmful to dry skin, which needs something slightly nourishing as a powder base. The oily skin needs just as much car'e of a different sort. Cream should not be left on too long and a little borax water softener will help when washing. HOW TO APPLY FACE CREAM. If you possibly can, get expert advice in chosing a face cream. It is not necessarily the most expensive that is the most efficacious. When applying cream to the face remember the right action stimulates the proper facial muscles and so assists in the improvement. ;

Alwayis use light upward and outward strokes, starting at the centre of the forehead and work to the temples; then round the eyes very gently and down the middle of your nose. From the centre of your chin go round to ttye upper lip, and, finally, from the outer corners of your mouth round the wing of the nose to the cheek bones. JJemember that diet plays an enormous part in keeping the complexion clear. Plenty of fruit and vegetables and lots of plain water between meals. Butter is excellent for a dry skin, also for nerves, which play such a part in adding wrinkles. •Lastly, the busy woman should learn to relax at odd moments to stave off those lines of weariness • and worry brought on by overwork.
