Japan Prepared to Scrap Big Navy
HOPES OTHERS WILLING TO DO THE SAME
(By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright.) Received Monday, 10 p.ra. TOKIO, Sept. 10. The Foreign Spokesman states Japan wants a new navy treaty replacing the present unsatisfactory pacts and reducing armaments and the people’s burdens. “Our idea is not to start competition by increasing armaments, but to have navies insufficient offensively but sufficient defensively; wherefore, if other Powers agree, we are ready to scrap our powerful attaching weapons. We earnestly hope that others are willing to work for such an agreement.” Meanwhile the Navy and Foreign Offices are doing their utmost to curb the publication of excitable rumours and to encourage calmness. The Foreign Spokesman’s stateis interpreted to mean that Japan will support the British desire to reduce battleships.
