VITAMIN MANUFACTURE BY CHEAP- PROCESS

In an address on vitamin C or ascorbic acid at the British Association ’a meeting. Professor Szent Gyormyi described how he became interested in the properties of the adrenal gland, near the kidneys, ,defects wherein,cause the shin of human beings to go brown. After -extracting a peculiar substance with, the properties of vitamin 0 from the adrenal glands of an animal, he pursued; .his ’ researches at Cambridge and prepared the same substance from plants and later in larger quantities in the United States. In. Hungary he diaCovered that parrika contained a large quantity-, of this substance. Chemical investigation at, Birmingham and Zurich ahowed .fthat its constitution was surprisingly, while brilliant researches by Haworth, Reichstein and ■others proved that it couldrr.be -synthe-eiDed.'r.-i Profs3sor Haworth and his colleagues recently discovered a simple method of enabling .this vitamin to be manufactured at, a. cost of a few pence pgr ounce. The process had been patented and dtbe frights handed to the British •Government Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The proceeds are'to; jbe, devoted to the advancement of science'.
