MOTOR TAXATION.

CONSIDERED BY COUNTY / COUNCIL.

At the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday a letter was received from the New Zealand Counties’ Association giving particulars; of a letter received from the Chief Executive Officer of the Transport Co-ordination Board. The letter stated that in accordance with a direction from the Rt. Hon. The Minister of Transport, the Board proposed to conduct an investigation into motor taxation and invited the views of transport bodies and road interests. Representations would be received at a series of meetings to be held in October. The main phases of taxation which it is proposed to cover are heavy traffic license fees, petrol tax, tyre tax, drivers’ licenses, annual licenses and customs duties on imported cars and parts. The letter asked for a concise expression of view's of the Council under the various headings as well as any other aspects of motor taxation, which may be regarded as important. The chairman (‘Mr. G. A. Monk) said that it was an important matter which moves to relieve taxation. If this was analysed, it would be found that the Council were directly and indirectly receiving a revenue from this source. The debt attached to the main highways would never have been undertaken had there not been this source of revenue. If this was removed it would jeopardise the position of public bodies'’ interests. The chairman ;said that he felt that the Council, with other Councils, should jealously guard this means of revenue and suggested a committee consisting of the Chairman, clerk and engineer should go into this matter.

O. Jensen said that in some eases, the Highways Board refused heavy traffic licenses and were therefore reducing the revenue.

Ct. KHmblett said that the time had come when the man on the land could not bear the thought of taxation. The suggested committee was ap* pointed to go further into the question.
