HOKIO-WAITARERE ROAD.

FORMATION AND METALLING TO BE UNDERTAKEN. At the August meeting of the Horowhenua County Council a committee consisting of the Chairman (Mr G. A. Monk) and Councillors G. P. Catley and !L. H. Best was appointed to consider the application of certain settlers in respect to the formation and metalling of a portion of the HokioWaitarere Road and the general policy of the Council in regard to the public roads at present unformed and metalled. At the September meeting on Saturday last the Committee submitted the following recommendations, which the Council decided to adopt: — 1. I’hat in accordance with the principle which promoted the consolidation of special rating districts the raising of further loans over small areas for reading purposes be discontinued.

2. That the future formation and metalling of existing unformed and metalled public roads be financed out of the general fund of the Council from time to time in accordance with the potential use and value of the land served by such roads. 3. That it be the practice of the Council to place a special sum on the estimates each financial year for the purpose of providing a fund with which to carry out a policy of permanent surfacing 1 of roads where such action is warranted.

4. That recommendations in respect to roads affected by Clauses 2 and 3 be submitted by the Works Committee to the Council from time to time. 5, That in accordance with the policy set out in Clause 1 the Council undertake the formation and metalling of approximately 32 chains of the Hokio-Waitarere Road during the current financial year at an estimated expenditure of £224. The Chairman said that in bringing down the recommendations it was seen that the Council would have to come to some definite policy without increasing the rates. Any work would be undertaken at the discretion of the Council. Councillors C. P. Catley, L-. H. Best, F. J. Ryder and C. P. Jensen spoke in support of the recommendations.
