The biggest gangster trial in India in modern time concluded when ten bandits were sentenced to transportation for life and five to ten years’ vigorous imprisonment, not to mention other various terms. Altogether there were thirty-seven accused of whom three turned King’s evidence. The trial occupied ten months and related to fifty-nine cases of robbery with violence. The gang was formed, from Bishar coal miners in 1919 and recruits wore gathered from time to time. They had an elaborate network of spies and bribed servants.
