OAT GROWING IN THE YUKON

SAMPLE OP FEILDING SEED HARVESTED. Recently Mr K. W. Dalrymple, of Bulls, received advice from the only farmers in the Yukon Territory, which he visited some three years ago, that the sample of Algerian seed oat sent by him from Feilding, had been successfully cultivated and a sowing from the proceeds of the first harvest had produced 50 bushels to the acre. In the course of a talk wth Mr Dalrymple yesterday on the subject of the introduction Of New Zealand-grown seed bats to the Yukon,; it was learned that "the farmers had been met by Mr Dalrymple when he was travelling down the Pelly river. They occupied the only farm in the territory and ha'd purchased it lock, stock and barrel, for 1000 dollars. A very poor variety of oats were grown on the farm and Mr Dalrymple undertook to send a sample of New. Zealand-grow# seed and on his return to New Zealand he forwarded lOlbs. of Algerians with the success recorded above. It apeared, said Mr Dalrymple, from recent, correspondence that the Algerians, while being a decided improvement on the type of oat common to the Yukon settlement, were not quite what was desired so he had decided to forward KWhs. of Gartens which had a larger kernel. The Gartons were secured in Feilding yesterday and posted off to their far away destination.

Mr Dalrymple stated that sowing took place in the Yukon about the end of May—everything had to be done within the short season of 90 days.
