Hotel Bar in Two Countries
A remarkable licensing anomaly which exists on the borders of Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, was mentioned at. a recent sitting of the Maidenhead licensing justices. Counsel .applied on behalf of licencees for an extension of closing hours on weekdays during the summer until half-past 10 o'clock instead of 10 o'clock. An hotel near Maidenhead Bridge, counsel said, was in two licensing areas, and to •mark the boundary a nail was driven in the counter. It river enthusiasts stood on the right side of the nail, he said, the barmaid would serve them, as they would be in Buckinghamshire, where the closing from- was half past'lo o'clock. If they were on the left side, she discreetly advised them to move into Buckinghamshire. The extension of hours was granted.
