Irrigating Poor Lands into Fertility

MINISTER INSPECTS NEW WORKS. ASHBURTON, Last Night. Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Lands, to-day inspected the irrigation experimental work at Scaficld conducted by the Lands Department, The Minister felt that much of the light land in Canterbury could be brought to a state of high production by irrigation.

The experiment inspected is being canned out on poor land and he would like to see similar work conducted on some of the richer landj indeed, on a variety of land to ascertain the most economical ways of irrigating. Excellent results are achieved in Central Otago, but the costs have been high and many settlers had not or apparently not been able to meet them. It was little use going on with schemes if the costs were not going to be met. He expressed the hope that something would bo done in Ashburton county as it •was the intention' to put men on smaller areas than the average farm and irrigation was going to help him to do it.
