British Officers in Hands of Bandits

Questioned regarding the latest information concerning the three British officers kidnapped from the steamer Nanchang off Manchukuo coast a months ago, Captain Anthony Eden said he was informed that the Japanese authorities were taking steps against the bandits generally in the district where these officers were held captive. According to a report, net yet confirmed, two of the officers escaped on July 7 and efforts are being made to locate them and rescue the other captive. The British Consular representative had also impressed on the authorities concerned the danger of direct military action against their captors.
