COUNTY WORKS.

A TOUR or INSPECTION. MODERN PAVING METHODS. A report was received by the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday from the Works Committee, dealing with several matters which it had made the subjects of an inspection. The committee met on June I4th and reelected Gr. Ryder as chairman. The report proceeds: — “The Committee, acompanied by the County Engineer, journeyed to Himatangi, and inspected the mix-in-place piece of pavement constructed by the Manawatu County Council. This is a' new type of pavement as far as New Zealand is concerned and can be well kept in mind. “After leaving Himatangi, the Committee proceeded to the Council’s pavement between Shannon and Makerua. An inspection of patching carried out by the engineer was made. There are throe types of work there: (a) pre-mix cold emulsion, which has set fairly well; (b) cut-back bitumen of 20-80 composition; and (c) cut-back bitumen that is of no use. The better job is (b) and one which can be recommended for patch-work on our pavements. “After leaving Shannon, the com-

mittee returned to Levin, and made an inspection of the construction of the intake of the Horowhenua water-races at the Ohau River, thence journeying to Blair’s Ford, where it is proposed to erect a new bridge. After inspecting the bridge site and examining the plans, it was recommended that the engineer approach the Public Works Department with the idea of having a better type of bridge erected. <‘ An inspection was also made of the "work being - carried out on the South Manakau Road.”

The engineer (Mr. Brewster), in his monthly report, stated: "The construction of the Horowhenua water-race intake is proceeding satisfactorily and will be completed this month.” Waitohu Bridge. The District Engineer (Mr, Sharp) wrote asking to be advised of the Council's intentions with regard to its contribution towards the cost of the bridge over the Waitohu Stream at Blair's Hoad. The County chairman (Mr. Monk) reported that the County Engineer and himself had seen the District Engineer, who agreed to use hardwood decking in place of the rimu suggested. He also agreed to call for tenders for the bridge so as to obtain some idea of the cost before asking the Council to deposit its amount of subsidy. The point was placed before the District Engineer that if the work could be done for less than double the amount of the Council's subsidy, the Council should not subsidise it more than £1 for £l. The chairman had also suggested to him that the Council would not- be satisfied with a two-girder bridge, and he was considering this aspect. It was decided to reply to the District Engineer's letter by stating that the Council is prepared to go on with the scheme on the conditions as arranged between himself and the chairman and the County Engineer.
