WOMEN S INSTITUTE.

KIMBERLEY. MONTHLY MEETING. The afternoon of Thursday, 6th inst., was again a busy one for the members of the Kimberley Women’s Institute. After the usual opening ceremony, votes of sympathy were passed to Mrs R. Evans (president), who has recently suffered the loss of her father, and to Mrs Crowe (treasurer) in the death of Mr Crowe’s mother. Apologies for absence were received from Mesclames Banning and Spencer. • \

Mcsdames Mellor and Field were elected as delegates to attend the group rally to be held in Levin in February next. Blackburn second, and Miss Mellor third.

An invitation has been issued to the neighbouring institutes, Levin, Koputaroa and Ihakara, to attend a social afternoon on August 3rd. A very interesting demonstration on rug-making from old woollen material, old silk stockings and odd scraps was given by Mrs Miles, of Stanway. She had with her some splendid samples of that particular handwork and these clearly showed to those present what 'beautiful and useful rugs could be made from that which would otherwise be wasted material. At the invitation of Mrs Evans, one of the Training Farm Committee, several of the W.I. members intend giving an evening entertainment to the boys at that institution. PARAPARAUMU.

Mrs. Mackay presided over a wellattended meeting of the Parapaiaumu Women’s Institute last Wednesday, which opened with the singing of the ‘ ‘ Ode to Friendship. ’ ’ Mrs. Mackay urged a more extended use of the W.I. library; fifty new books having lately been added. A vote of sympathy was passed for Mrs. Harrison, of Pahiatua, in the loss of her daughter. Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Cameron demonstrated the making of seagrass stools. Mrs. J. Beckett won the whistling solo competition. A roll call of much interest followed: (1) The happiest hour of my day; (2) My favourite book or poem; (3) My best pudding recipe.
