TRIP TO SQUARE KNOB.

Yesterday offered perfect conditions out-of-doors and a party of three local trampers had a very enjoyable outing; with Square Knob as their objective. They left the Pipe Bridge at 8.30 a.m. and travelling via the Ohau Hut, ascended the Knob by a ridge leading from the Porks, reaching the top at 12.20 p.m. Here the billy was boiled and the party lunched. By means of a small hand mirror, signals- Were flashed to Levin and were answered from three or four points in town. With a knowledge of Morse, communication eoull easily be maintained on such a day as, yesterday between parties in the hills and observers in Levin. The trampers left -Square Knob about 2.30, and descended via the- Wai-iti stream and tramline-, reaching the Pipe Bridge at 5.45. The route followed was a new one and the travelling was somewhat arduous in places where the leatherwood and supplejacks were thick. Recent signs- of deer were numerous, but none were sighted, their actual whereabouts being a mystery to the trampers. Many interesting views were' obtained from new angles and the conditions for photography were excellent.
