LEVIN ABATTOIRS.

RETURNS FOR APRIL. BY-PRODUCTS WORKS NEARING COMPLETION. ‘The stock that passed through the Levin Abattoir last month showed a decline on the figures for April in each of the three preceding years, but it is exacted that a rapid recovery will be made when the by products works commence operations. The report received from.' the Abattoir Manager (Mr H. H, Townsend) by the Borough Council on Monday evening gave- the following returns of stock slaughtered in April of this and the three previous years:—

Of the number killed last month one cow, five' sheep and two pigs were wholly condemned, and five pigs were partially condemned. The total fees for the month were: 1933, £lO6 6s lid; 1932, £l7B 11s; 1931, £157 Is 4d; 1930, £146 Os 6d. A request was received from the Manawatu Meat and Cold Storage Coy,. Ltd., for a water service to ,the byproducts works. ■On the motion of Cr.j Keedwell (chairman of the Abattoir Committee), seconded by Cr. Harvey, the application was granted. Cr. Keedwell reported as to some modifications required in the shelter roof and the trucking system between the- abattoir and the by-products works. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. France, authority was given to the Committee to carry out the proposed alterations, subject to the satisfaction of all parties concerned. Cr. Keedwell stated that the firm expected to have the plant completed in three- weeks and running in a month. The engineer who was erecting it said it was the most up-to-date plant of its type that he had seen.
