Drainage Hoard yesterday that it had received instructions from the Unemployment Board to establish a camp for single men. at Coley’s bend in the Planawatu river, to undertake the deepening of the Tuapunga cuts which shorten a, dangerous section of the river adjacent to the Foxton-Shaunon road and about twomiles from Shannon. The message was received with satisfaction by the Drainage Board as it has recently been put to considerable expense effecting- repairs to the river banks in the vicinity-as the result of a fresh. A break in the 'bank would mean that the lower portion of the fertile Hakerua plains would be inundated and spell ruin to the settlers. The Taupunga cuts strike through the centre of an S shape twist in theriver and their deepening, it is estimated, will give employment for 200 men for a period ef four months.
