A salmon hooked by Mr E. W. Kilworth, of Seddon Street, Beckingham, in the Waimakariri River the other day had to be played for an hour before landing. It (bit at 7 o ’clock and was brought ashore at 8 o’clock. It weighed 341 b, was 3ft. 9 in. long, and 24in. round the .girth.

A Christchurch man who used occasionally to have a flutter on the “tote” recently decided to be.his own bookmaker. When he would normally have put a pound on a horse, he put it away in a drawer. One or two slow horses 'soon established a fund in the drawer, so that when he did strike a winner, he was able to .pay himself out the dividend. Otherwise the money, being lost stayed in the drawer. Recently, at the end of the first year’s business, he took his wife to Rotorua for a holiday on his “losses.”

Three passengers, King’s Cross to 'Edinboro snugly seated in a firstclass “smoker,’’ got to comparing notes about tobacco, (chronicles a trade .‘paper). No. 1 said he was from South Africa, and asked for nothing bettor than the Rhodesian. No. 2 said he was from America, and kinder reckoned the American tobacco the best on earth. No. 3 remarked that he hailed from New Zealand and that the N.Z. challenged comparison with any , leaf grown. Tastes differ of course. But leading experts agree with the New Zealander. The outstanding merit of New Zealand tobacco is largely owing to the fact that it is toasted —just us coffee and cocoa beans are. Hence its unique flavour and fragrance. Yes: and toasting does more: it absorbs the poisonous nicotine, thus rendering the tobacco absolutely harmless. There is no other toasted “weed.” The four brands -manufactured are: Eiverhead Gold, Navy Cut No. 3, Cavendish and Cut Plug No. 10. "Every tobacconist sells these goods, but buyers are eau'tioned that the popularity of N.Z. tobacco has caused imitations to get on the market.*
